The Doomsday Book – Part 7

Some time ago I began a series of posts talking about the Book of Life, a series triggered by conversations I had been having with friends concerning the Doomsday Book. Somehow I missed posting the final article and so am just getting that online now.

Our final Scriptures referring to the book of life are in Revelation 13:8 and Revelation 17:8. They deal with taking a stand for the Lord and salvation.

Standing for God and the Book of Life

The testimony of Scripture is that no one is truly free. We all follow the ways of God or we follow Satan on the broad path that leads to destruction. Those not in the book of life follow Satan and unless they they turn to Christ they have no salvation.

Those whose name is in the book will not be deceived; they will take a stand for God. Taking a stand is slightly different, though intrinsically linked with service. Service is something we do because of what we believe. Taking a stand has to do with simply being who God has made us despite the activity of those around us.

If we are not living sanctified lives, separated from sin, then we associate ourselves with the devil, not God. Previous Scriptures have linked association with other believers and God with those whose names are in the Book of Life. The Lamb slain since before the foundation of the World

One of the most wonderful and at the same time heart-breaking truths we find in the Bible is that of the Lamb of God, slain since before the foundation of the world. We cannot understand the workings of God, but before Adam and Eve ever took a breath in the Garden of Eden, before the fall had ever occurred, God had prepared a way of deliverance, a way of Salvation!

Ephesians 1:4 – According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Titus 1:2 – In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

I Peter 1:18-20 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; (19) But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (20) Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

Realise your place in the eternal plan of God! Since before the foundation of the world God had made a way of salvation for you!

Revelation 20:11-15 – Salvation and the Book of Life

At the end of this world, before the saints enter into God’s presence for all eternity, we read that Books will be opened and these books are the Records of sins. What will be in the Books? I cannot say for sure, but here are some possibilities:

Psalm 139:4 – For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.

Matthew 12:36 – But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Ecclesiastes 12:14 – For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Jude 1:15 – To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
Revelation 20:12 – judged… according to their works”
Amos 8:7 – The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

If you are in the book of life then you will not be judged out of the other books which must contain works and sins.

Those not found in the book of life are cast into the Lake of Fire. The Book of life is mentioned, but the saints are not present at the Great White Throne Judgment. Perhaps the books are compared. There is almost the feel of a court of law, sinners being convinced:

Of their sin from the books of their sins Of their rejection of God – by their absence from the book of Life

Revelation 21:22-27

This final Scriptures gives the fulfilment and completion of those things pictured in other passages. In this passage of fulfilment, this beautiful passage that ties together all the purposes of God we find a most beautiful phrase

The Lamb’s Book of Life!

Christ saved us from the miry pit of sin. Ephesians 2 describes us as dead in our trespasses and sins and Isaiah 64:6 describes our own righteousness, our best efforts, as amounting to nothing but filthy rags

Conclusion The truth of the Lamb’s Book of Life stretches all through Scripture, from Exodus to Revelation! More amazingly, it begins sometime in eternity past and those whose names are written in the Book will live for eternity!

The final thoughts with which I will leave you today are simple:

Is your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life?
Is your joy based upon the fact that your name is in the Lamb’s Book of Life?
