1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee.2 And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:5 That they may believe that the Lord God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. – Exodus 4:1-5
When receiving details of his commission Moses uttered excuses that we so often use ourselves. He even puts them in the order we often do.
Most believers, especially but not exclusively young believers, are encouraged to share their faith one of the first fears they express is
But what will people say?
We are afraid they will not believe us, or they will reject us, or some other negative experience will take place. And instead of trying to witness and going with a slim chance of success, we do nothing where there is no chance.
In dealing with Moses God told him that He would provide signs, evidences that God was real and had indeed sent Moses. God took upon Himself the responsibility to convince the hearers, He did not tell Moses to shoulder that load alone. All Moses had to do was pick up that rod and go!
When we go to share our faith with others we need to remember this. The responsibility to convince people about God is not ours, the responsibility to go is! Pick up your weapon/tool, not a rod, but the Bible. Go and tell others what Christ has done for you.
